Maastricht

Cosmopolitan Maastricht hugs the border with Belgium and Germany and is worth at least a stop en-route to Germany. The city is perhaps best known for the Maastricht Treaty signed here in 1992, however there's more to this town than European politics - there's a vibrant international atmosphere and one of the country's largest concentrations of bars, a couple of central squares as well as the usual collection of churches and museums.

Coming & going

The train and bus stations are located in the Wijk neighbourhood on the east of the Maas River about 500 metres from the city centre. There are regular trains to Amsterdam, Luxembourg, Liège, Aachen and Cologne.

Maastricht Airport handles mostly European commuter flights although there's also the odd charter flight. The airport is situated 20 minutes north of the city - bus 61 connects the airport with Markt and the train station every 30 minutes.
