The northeast’s largest city is becoming a popular destination with many travellers searching for the genuine England away from the tourist hoards down south. Its metropolitan area, which includes the suburbs of Gateshead, Sunderland, South Shields, North Shields and Tynemouth, offers an impressive array of attractions with many of Newcastle’s top sights relating to its Roman heritage at the eastern end of Hadrian’s Wall.

Local transport

The Newcastle area has an excellent public transport system that is comprised of buses and a metro.

Single tickets cost from £1.80 to £3.40 depending on the distance travelled. There are also the Metro DaySaver pass that gives you unlimited metro travel after 9am on weekdays and all day on weekends. The DaySaver costs £2.70–4.60 for travel on metro and suburban rail services. The Day Rover ticket costs £7 and gives you unlimited bus, ferry, metro and rail travel within Tyne and Wear.
