The minimum age of drivers is 18 years. Children must be at least 12 years of age to sit in the front seat. The use of seat belts is compulsory for front- and rear-seat passengers. Motorcyclists must wear a helmet. The legal blood alcohol limit is 50 mg. Speed limits are as follows: 50km/h (30 mph) in built-up areas, 90km/h (54 mph) outside built-up areas, 100km/h (60 mph) on dual-carriageways, 130km/h (78 mph) on motorways, 80km/h (50 mph) for a car with a caravan or trailer travelling outside built-up areas or on motorways, and 90km/h (56 mph) for motorcycles outside built-up areas.
All moving vehicles must use headlights night and day.
Buses now have priority when leaving a busstop and they tend to assert it; so be careful.
Police are no longer empowered to collect fines on the spot. Instead they will write a ticket payable at a Slovenian bank or post office. Penalties have become quite high.
Fuel stations at border entry points and along motorways are open 24 hours; others are open from 7am to 8pm Mon-Sat. Credit cards are widely accepted. Leaded super petrol has an octane rating of 95. Lead-free petrol or neosvinceni benzin or EuroSuper 95, is marked with green on the pump, and has an octane rating of 91 or 95. Diesel pumps are marked with black.
