Train travel in Finland

Finnish trains are operated by Valtion Rautatiet (VR) and are high-tech, clean and reliable just like most other things in Finland. Connections are especially good between Helsinki, Tampere and Turku, while the international service between Helsinki and St Petersburg is popular with budget travellers. Eurail and InterRail are valid in Finland.

Single tickets are valid for 8 days and the journey must be made according to the route shown on the ticket. Return tickets are valid for a one-month period, however you only save around 5% over the cost of two single tickets.

If a group of you are travelling together, ask about getting a special group price. If you're travelling in a group of 3 to 10 people you can get a 20% discount off the cost of your ticket. If there are 11 or more of you, you can save 25%.

The new high-tech train service between Helsinki and Turku is called the Pendolino. The new high-speed trains operate four daily services in each direction and connect the two cities in around two hours.
