Train travel in Croatia

The Croatian train network is a slow way to get around the country with most locals preferring to travel by bus. There are good connections between Zagreb and many central European destinations such as Ljubljana, Munich, Vienna and Budapest, however domestic services aren't so good with many of the internal routes being cut off as they used to go through Bosnia and Serbia. The most useful routes include the services from Zagreb to Rijeka and Pula, Sibenik and Split and Zadar. Dubrovnik is not connected to the rail network, your best bet is to take the train to Split and the bus or ferry from Split to Dubrovnik.

InterRail passes are valid in Croatia, although it is unlikely that you'll get much value from your pass since train travel in Croatia is much cheaper than other parts of Europe.

If you're having trouble trying to decipher the timetable at the station, the word for arrivals is dolazak and departures in either odlazak or polazak. Putnicki is a local train, brzi or ubrazni is a fast train and poslovni is an executive (1st class only) train which may require a obvezatno (compulsory seat reservation). If you need to change trains this should be indicated by presjedanje.
