AIR
Athens new Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (tel 01 0 3530000; website www.aia.gr) is 33km southeast of the city centre.
The metro connects the airport with the city centre. The one-way fare is €6.
There are also several efficient airport bus services that cost €2.90. These include route X94 (to Ethniki Amyna metro station), X95 (to Syntagma Square) and X96 to Piraeus.
BUS
Bus is the best way to get around Greece and Athens has four long-distance bus terminals.
Terminal A (tel 01 0 5124910) at the corner of Menandrou and Zinonos near Omonia is served by bus route 051 and has buses to Thessaloniki and destinations in the Peloponnese.
Terminal B (tel 01 0 8317153) has buses to Delphi, Larisa and Volos. It's located on Agiou at Liossion 260 and is served by bus route 024.
The Mavromateon Terminal at the corner of Alexandras and 28 Oktovriou-Patission (metro Viktorias) bas buses to destinations near the city in southern Attica.
International buses to Albania, Bulgaria and Turkey operated by OSE depart from the Peloponnese train station.
TRAIN
Athens' two train stations are located next to each other and are connected by a bridge across the train tracks. Both stations are served by Larisis metro station.
Larisis station (tel 01 0 5298837) has trains to Thessaloniki, northern Greece and all international services. Peloponnese station (tel 01 0 5131601) has trains to the Peloponnese including Corinth and Patras.
FERRY
Pireaus, south of the city centre, is Athens port. It is a busy neighbourhood with loads of travellers passing through.
There are ferries from Pireaus to most Greek islands as well as international services to Cyprus and Israel. Ferries to the Ionian islands and Italy depart from Patras on the Peloponnese and Igoumenitsa in northern Greece.
The tourist office near Syntagma publishes a weekly ferry schedule.
HITCHHIKING
Athens is a difficult place to hitch from and not that many travellers do it.
It you want to hitch to the Peloponnese take bus 860 or 880 to Dafni and try your luck on the N8.
The N1 is the best route for lifts to northern Greece. Take the metro to Kifissia, then a bus to the N1 at Nea Kifissia.
