Generally lunch is the biggest and best value meal of the day, usually served between 2pm and 4pm while most people don't go out for dinner until around 9.30 and many restaurants don't even open before 8.30pm.
The best deal in local restaurants is the cheap plat combinat which is a basic one course meal. A better deal, but still quite affordable, is the menú del día - a set-price two or three course meal which many cheaper restaurants serve at lunchtime.
There are plenty of fast food places include some home-grown favourites such as the xurros amb xocolata (churros with chocolate). Most bars and cafés also serve quite substantial snacks.
Of course saving money is an essential part of backpacking and in Barcelona you can try traditional Barcelona fare while eating a cheap picnic lunch. Call in at the market for some bread, tomatoes and olive oil and feast on pa amb tomàquet - sandwiches made from squashed tomatoes with salt and olive oil. If you're serious about preparing your own food, check out the incredible Mercat de Sant Josep centrally located at La Rambla 91 (metro Liceu).
If you're vegetarian, it's best to eat at Asian restaurants or prepare your own food.
Barcelona is a great party city. There are bars on virtually every corner and they come in all shapes and sizes from smoky local haunts to Irish pubs and brash American theme bars. Whatever your scene - you're bound to find a bar where you feel at home.
Although it's a great place to party, people don't get drunk a lot and it is fairly common to nurse a drink for an hour or so. At least you won't stand out if you're trying to save money.
Many of the smaller local places will bill you when you leave, particularly during quieter periods before it gets really busy. It is common, but not compulsory, to round the bill up to the nearest euro if you had table service or had food with your drinks.
